Turn Ninety-Nine
Brief Recap: Last turn the party decided to bypass the guards and hike to the far side of the mountain before ascending. Up Holy Simrise It is dawn the following day. The party hiked all night around the village and started up the mountainside, and now stands before a large crevasse, a deep fissure in the mountain across their route. Beyond it they can see the trail. The two guards are at least two miles below them on the trail, to the party's left. To their right, up the trail, awaits the tomb of Teal'c. But first they must cross the crevasse. Their horses were stashed in a canyon several miles away in the foothills north of town. They have all their equipment and some food and all their weapons. Ebenezer also has two large empty canvas duffelbags rolled up. "For loot," he says with a wink. Now they stand before the crevasse, looking at the trail beyond. The crevasse is at its narrowest 15' across. It looks like a smooth firm landing on the other side, a great slab of granite free of dirt of plants. But Ebenezer, who still gasps with the effort of the hike, says he cannot possibly make such a leap. The fissure drops at least seventy feet sheer, certain death for anyone falling in. There are boulders on both sides within reach of the company's ropes, and Sam's pack includes many choks, pitons, and carabineers for climbing, as well as a small heavy mallet. Ebenezer purchased them in Trajia at Sam's suggestion. Ebenezer now stretches his back and regains his breath. "We could string a rope across, but we need someone on the other side." He looks at Louie, bends over and squeezes the thief's thigh. "You got skinny legs. Think you can jump it?" "Do I get hazard pay?" Louie smiles. He strips his pack, weapons, etc., and get down to the bare minimum of weight (though not naked). He turns around and looks at Sam and the rest. "Hand me the rope." he says. "I will tie it around my waist and jump. If I don't make it, hold on tight!" He smiles. After this ado, he goes for it (assuming the others grab the rope and prepare to save him if he fails the jump.) Timberline Sam ties the other end of the rope around him and braces his feet against some nearby rocks for leverage in case Louie doesn't make it. Louie soars across the chasm and lands on his feet. He turns around and the party can see him smile back at them. He quickly ties the rope around a large boulder while Sam passes the near end around another boulder on his side. Sam then tosses the remaining rope back to Louie, so Louie has both ends, each one extending across the chasm and around the boulder near Sam. Louie secures the second end. The party crosses without incident. They retrieve the rope and begin the final leg of the hike up to the summit of Holy Simrise.
