Midgard Serpent

Turn Fifty-One

Brief Recap: Last turn, the party journeyed from Galay on the ship The Broken Wind toward the Barrow Isle. There they expect to find the object of Bibi's original quest, the object which brought the company to meet Humphrey as well. Now all their lives, and the lives of literally all the Wurld, hang upon their quest.

The Quest to the Barrow Isle

Fyona stands at the stern of the ship, leaning with her back against the wooden rail surrounding the deck. A lone deckhand swabs with a mop and sailors are in the rigging of the single large mast. She sees Ghotu in the bow of the ship, his stare into the west and the setting sun broken frequently by long looks northward, as if he fears to turn his back on the dark storm clouds which gather there. Bibi stands nearby, shivering in her cloak, also watching the north.

Bronk and Bardock had both been seasick since the first evening, three days ago. Mog does not like the sun, Fyona learned, because he is actually an orc. He and Humphrey spent most of their time below deck, the old mage studying his spellbooks, the orc doing whatever it was he did. She didn't want to know what happened to Thaddius' head after that seance.

Fyona noticed that Ghotu did not go to the seance. She also saw the look on his face when Blade mutilated Thaddius' body and wrote his name in the mage's blood. She got the impression that though most of the party were members of a company, there were serious differences between them.

Turning to face the rear of the boat, the darkening east, Fyona removes a small container of balm from her belt pouch. She removes her glove and dabs a finger in the clear ointment, and rubs it on the tattoo on her neck, a Githyanki rune put there by Thae-Rune Ibn.

She turns around to see Blade drop from a yardarm line onto the deck a few meters away, a look on his face like he could get used to sailing. He has the look of a scoundrel, but not a pirate, Fyona decides.

[Insert gratuitous sex scene here, or conversation leading to implied sex scene indicated by Barry White music fadeout...]

Ghotu's keen eye, bred on the nomad planes of Shamar, sees the wyvern riders first. He gives a warning yell to alert the rest of the ship, pointing with a javelin toward the oncoming enemy, still only smudges on the distant horizon. The ship makes good headway, riding the growing sea in a smooth rythm, a quickening rythm. The captain comes out of the cabin and looks north with a spyglass, cursing. "Arm yerselfs, laddies, and get out the crossbow. The crew produce three bows and several javelins, the first mate bringing the captain a heavy crossbow with large iron bolts.
